• Is Adult Stem Cell Therapy Alive and Well in Europe?

    Updated: 2010-09-30 15:27:13
Unfortunately, stem cell therapy has fallen for the most part on hard times because there just is not much money to be made.  As harsh as that seems, most research is done because at the end of the rainbow is a pot of gold.   This pot of gold is elusive when you “own the cells”.   What we [...]

  • Can insomnia cause early death in males?

    Updated: 2010-09-29 19:49:24
Can a lack of sleep, – or insomnia as it is commonly known, cause premature death amongst males? Well, apparently we’re all supposed to be having between seven and eight hours of sleep per night. This is the golden quantity of sleep that is supposed to assure our health and well-being. Now, one of the [...]

  • The SYNTAX Trial and What It Has Taught Us

    Updated: 2010-09-28 17:52:02
I have been writing about the SYNTAX Trial because it provides an insight into how research and disease management progress.  Also, it provides an interesting look as to how we as cardiologists continue to butt up against a procedure, coronary artery bypass, and try to “prove we are better”.   One of the main reasons I write [...]

  • Three Ways to Treat Clogged Heart Arteries: Which is Best?

    Updated: 2010-09-28 08:44:47
Ongoing scientific studies guide physician recommendations for their patients with blockages in the heart arteries, an illness known as coronary heart disease (CHD) r coronary artery disease (CAD). The three major treatment options are: 1) coronary artery bypass grafting, 2) angioplasty, and 3) medical therapy. The best treatment is tailored to the individual patient.

  • Are men working themselves literally to death?

    Updated: 2010-09-26 19:45:13
// If you’re male, unfit and are working long hours regularly at the Office, then listen up, because this article is for you! The United Kingdom suffers from the unenviable statistic of having one of the highest heart attack rates per capita in the world – with someone somewhere suffering from one every two minutes, [...]

  • The SYNTAX Trial and How We Are Still Crazy

    Updated: 2010-09-23 01:55:04
The SYNTAX Trial is a marvel to behold.  I can only applaud the excellence that was demonstrated by these physicians who did both the surgery and the angioplasty in this trial  — truly a tour de force.   One of the main problems with these studies, as with much of medical research, is that the ground [...]

  • The True Meaning of Crazy

    Updated: 2010-09-21 22:05:36
When I was in training I had the experience of a lifetime.  I had the very good fortune of being trained by physicians who still rank among the best in the world.  I had the opportunity to work with Dr. Andreas Gruentzig and Dr. Spencer King, true legends in cardiology.  I still have not met [...]

  • I Have Been Telling Them This From the Beginning

    Updated: 2010-09-16 15:10:11
In past blogs, I have reviewed that the value of angioplasty resides in its relief of angina much like the value of most coronary artery bypass operations.  Angioplasty does not prevent myocardial infarctions or death.   Now an article backs up my contention.  Published on line in the Annals of Internal Medicine and in print Ann Intern [...]

  • A Reprieve Kind Of…

    Updated: 2010-09-14 18:51:59
As I blogged about last time, the FDA was set to remove the drug midodrine from the market. Midodrine has been in use since 1996, after it was approved by the accelerated approval process that came into effect during the beginning of the AIDS crisis. Clearly, the FDA must have read my blog because it and [...]

  • The FDA and Drug Withdrawal

    Updated: 2010-09-09 16:27:34
Capitalism and science do not mix.  In a perfect world, there would be no need to make money on drugs.  They would be provided because we need them.  This is why there is a class of drugs and diseases known as “orphan” because although the drugs are required, there is no money to support them.   How much [...]

  • Both Short and Long Sleep Durations are Risk Factors

    Updated: 2010-09-09 01:37:54
A study in the Aug. 1 issue of the journal SLEEP suggests that regularly sleeping for more or less than seven hours per day is linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Results show that eight percent of the study population reported sleeping five hours per day or less including naps, and multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that their risk of any cardiovascular disease was more than two times higher than that of people who reported a daily sleep duration of seven hours (adjusted odds ratio = 2.20). Nine percent of participants reported sleeping nine hours or more per day, and they also had an elevated risk of cardiovascular disease (adjusted OR = 1.57). Results were adjusted for potential confounders such as age, sex, race, smoking, alcohol consumption, body mass index, physical activity, diabetes, high blood pressure and depression........

  • More heart attacks in cooler weather

    Updated: 2010-09-09 01:37:54

  • New tool to rule out coronary heart disease

    Updated: 2010-09-09 01:37:54
A simple new rule can help primary care physicians rule out coronary heart disease in patients with chest pain, states a study published in CMAJ (Canadian Medical Association Journal) (pre-embargo link only) http://www.cmaj.ca/embargo/cmaj100212.pdf. Chest pain is common, yet it is challenging for primary care physicians to reliably identify serious cardiac disease while protecting patients from unnecessary interventions........

  • Chaos theory help predict heart attacks

    Updated: 2010-09-09 01:37:54
Chaos models may someday help model cardiac arrhythmias -- abnormal electrical rhythms of the heart, say scientists in the journal CHAOS, which is published by the American Institute of Physics. In recent years, medical research has drawn more attention to chaos in cardiac dynamics. Eventhough chaos marks the disorder of a dynamical system, locating the origin of chaos and watching it develop might allow scientists to predict, and maybe even counteract, certain outcomes........

    Updated: 2010-09-09 01:37:54
Obese people without metabolic risk factors for diabetes and heart disease, such as hypertension and cholesterol, do not have the elevated cardiovascular risk typical of obesity, but they represent only a small percentage of the obese population, as per a long-term study. The results will be presented Saturday at The Endocrine Society's 92nd Annual Meeting in San Diego........

  • Mediterranean-style diet improves heart function

    Updated: 2010-09-09 01:37:54
A study of twins shows that even with genes that put them at higher risk of cardiovascular disease, eating a Mediterranean-style diet can improve heart function, as per research reported in Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes, an American Heart Association journal. Using data from the Emory Twins Heart Study, scientists observed that men eating a Mediterranean-style diet had greater heart rate variability (HRV) than those eating a Western-type diet. Heart rate variability refers to variation in the time interval between heart beats during everyday life - reduced HRV is a risk factor for coronary artery disease and sudden death........

  • Exercise trumps creatine in cardiac rehab

    Updated: 2010-09-09 01:37:54
Athletes have been enjoying the benefits of creatine supplements to gain stronger muscles since the 1990s, and the supplement has also proven beneficial among other groups. Could it help cardiac patients regain strength to help with their heart-training workouts as part of rehabilitation? The evidence at this stage suggests not - exercise alone proved a far more powerful tonic for patients in a study out today. The results appear in the journal Clinical Rehabilitation, published by SAGE........
